Sidmouth 5-a-side Football Tournament

Brixington Blues fielded two sides in the Sidmouth Town tournament held at Newton Poppleford.  The ‘B’ team progressed to the second phase of the group matches, but failed to make the semi finals.  The ‘A’ team reached the semi finals, but lost at that stage of the tournament.

Blues ‘A’ won their first four 1st phase group matches, beating Sidmouth Waifs 2-0 (Jake Preece, Lewie Farrant), Colyton ‘A’ 2-1 (Joe Harnick, Luke Moody), Sidmouth Strays 4-0 (Harnick 2, Preece, Moody) and S A S ‘B’ 1-0 (Harnick), then drew the fifth match 0-0 with Heavitree Dynamos.  In the 2nd phase, they beat S A S ‘A’ 1-0 (Moody), drew 1-1 with Colyton ‘A’ (Preece) and beat Colyton ‘B’ 2-1 (Moody, Preece).  Although Blues ‘A’ had played well to this point, they were beginning to tire and lost 0-1 to Heavitree in the semi final.

After losing their first two 1st phase matches 0-1 to S A S ‘A’ and 0-2 to Sidmouth Imps, Blues ‘B’ showed great character in fighting back to beat Beacon Knights 2-0 (Andy McInnes, Jacob Bellamy) and Seaton Town 2-0 (Shane Fyles, Ryan Fraser-Roe), then drew 1-1 with Colyton ‘B’ (McInnes).  All their 2nd phase matches were 1-1 draws against Sidmouth Waifs (Fraser-Roe), Sidmouth Imps (Fyles) and Heavitree Dynamos (Fraser-Roe).  They had just failed to reach the semi final.

Blues ‘A’:  Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Joe Harnick, Jake Preece, Luke Moody Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Owen Newson.

Blues ‘B’:  Ben Wiltshire, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ollie Stowe, Shane Fyles, Dan Reynolds, Andy McInnes and Jacob Bellamy

Twyford Spartans 6-a-side Football Tournament (U12’s)

Clubmates and strong rivals Brixington Blues and Brixington United were both outstanding and played some superb football in the Twyford Spartans (HEPCO) Tournament at Tiverton, despite the awful weather and increasingly difficult, muddy conditions.

The Blues were undefeated in Group I, which they won by scoring 13 times without reply.  In their six group matches (scorers in brackets) they beat Braunton ‘A’ 4-0 (Jake Preece, Joe Harnick, Shane Fyles and own goal), drew 0-0 with Plymouth Parkway, beat Street & Glastonbury ‘A’ 3-0 ( Harnick, Preece and own goal), drew 0-0 with Kewstoke ‘A’, beat Twyford Sparta 4-0 (Fyles 2, Preece and Harnick) and beat Barnstaple ‘B’ 2-0 (Lewie Farrant and Luke Moody).

United faced a tough group, but backed by a solid defence which didn’t concede a single goal in the group, they played some great football.  Wins over Holway 2-0 (West 2), Weston Crusaders 3-0 (West, Smith and Barnett) and Hamilton 2-0 (West and Smith), combined with 0-0 draws with Kewstoke ‘B’, Braunton ‘B’ and SAS ‘A’ meant that United topped their group.

Both teams won their quarter finals, Blues beating Stoke Hill 2-1 (Moody and Harnick) and United beating Kewstoke ‘A’ 1-0 (West).

Unfortunately, Blues and United then had to play each other, so that only one could progress to the final.  This time it was Blues turn and after beating United 3-0 (Preece 2 and Darryn Carpenter-Cossey), they contested the final with Braunton ‘A’.

The final was a very close affair, with neither side able to break the deadlock.  After extra time the match was still goalless and had to be decided by a penalty shootout.  The Blues brilliant keeper, Billy Zberowski, had only conceded a single goal in all nine matches and was not about to let his team down now.  He produced two fantastic saves and almost got to the other penalty which just sneaked in off the post.  Lewie Farrant and Jake Preece both scored to ensure a 2-1 victory, so the Blues last penalty did not need to be taken.  The team has now already won two tournaments this season, playing marvellous football which is a credit to the Club.

Blues:  Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Joe Harnick, Jake Preece, Luke Moody, Shane Fyles and Dan Reynolds.

United: Dean Rawlings, Dan Clarke, Ben Pratt, Tom Sellick, Liam Wardle, Liam West, Marcus Barnett and Howard Smith.

St Martins 5-a-side Football Tournament (U12’s)

Brixington Blues put the disappointment of losing last week’s Hendy Honda Friendly Competition Cup Final behind them by bouncing back to win their first tournament this season, at St Martins, Exminster.  This was one step better than at last year’s tournament, when they were runners up.

The Blues did it in style, winning all their six matches without conceding a single goal and their captain, Jake Preece, didn’t miss any of the four penalties he was called on to take.

They won their three Group A matches (scorers in brackets) by beating St Martins 1-0 (Joe Harnick); Pinhoe Spartans 2-0 (Andy McInnes and Harnick); and Heavitree Hammers 1-0 (Jake Preece – penalty).

Next, they won their quarter final against West Exe 1-0 (Preece – penalty) and their semi final against Pinhoe Spartans 5-0 (Preece – penalty; Harnick 2; Luke Moody and Ryan Fraser-Roe).

On to the final against St Martins and this time the Blues won 2-0 (Preece – penalty and Harnick), to conclude an excellent day’s football, despite the awful weather.

Hendy Honda Friendly Cup Final

Blues 4-5 West Exe

Unfortunately, the cold, wet weather did not do justice to the splendid setting of St James Park for the Hendy Honda Friendly Competition Cup and Plate Finals day.

Brixington Blues got off to the worst possible start when a West Exe attacker dived over keeper Billy Zberowski and was awarded a penalty, which was duly converted.

The Blues equalised when Shane Fyles passed the ball across to Dan Reynolds, who pulled it back for Luke Moody to score.  West Exe went ahead again, but Moody equalised for the second time when he ran on to the keeper’s clearance and the ball rebounded off him into the net.  So at half time the Blues were back on terms at 2-2.

After dominating the opening period of the second half, the Blues conceded three more goals and were left with a mountain to climb.  In a magnificent fight back, they scored twice more themselves, however, both through Lewie Farrant.  The first was a penalty and the second came after Jake Preece had passed the ball to Joe Harnick who played it on for Farrant to finish the move.

The Blues then pressed even harder, but unfortunately the equaliser just wouldn’t come and West Exe were very relieved when they heard the final whistle.

The Blues players should all be very proud of their performances.  They may have lost the match, but they won a lot of hearts.  As the chairman of the Friendly League commented afterwards, “Of the ten finals played today, this, the last match, was definitely the best!”

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Andy McInnes, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Owen Newson, Lewie Farrant, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Dan Reynolds, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Ollie Stowe, Jacob Bellamy, and Marvin Weir.

Blues 7-5 Broadclyst

This entertaining, high scoring match saw Brixington Blues establish a two goal lead, then find themselves two goals in arrears before ending up two goals in front, again.

Jacob Bellamy received a pass from Joe Harnick and opened the scoring for the Blues.  Galloway equalised for Broadclyst.  Bellamy scored his second after Harnick had taken the ball through the Broadclyst defence.  He then completed his hat trick with an excellent volley, following a good pass from Jake Preece.

The game see-sawed over to Broadclyst when they scored the next four goals, all via the outstanding Galloway, to put the Blues 3-5 behind – then back again to the Blues with four goals of their own, giving them a 7-5 victory.

The Blues fourth goal was scored by Luke Moody when he ran through one on one with the keeper.  Harnick then ran the ball through the Broadclyst defence and his angled shot flew high into the net, putting the Blues back on terms at 5-5.

Owen Newson headed the Blues sixth goal from Moody’s cross.  Billy Zberowski won the ball and passed it through for Moody to complete the scoring.

This match provided an excellent all round workout for the Blues a week before their cup final at St James Park on Saturday 14th May, kick off 3.45pm .

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Owen Newson, Lewie Farrant, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Dan Reynolds, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Ollie Stowe, Jacob Bellamy, Marvin Weir and Ben Wiltshire.

 Blues 3-2 Central

Brixington Blues will play much better than this and lose matches.  For much of what was one of their worst games this season, the defence, midfield and attack played as completely separate units and the only thing that linked them was the colour of their shirts.  Having played their last two matches on smaller, narrower pitches, they didn’t seem to be able to cope with a much larger, wider pitch.  But they’ll have to when they meet West Exe in the cup final at St James Park in just two weeks time.

Although not playing particularly well, the Blues established a two-goal lead.  Certain players appeared to think that the match was already over and relaxed to the point of complacency.  The team play then deteriorated rapidly and there were more and more occasions when the Blues were second to the ball.  This allowed Central back in to a game which the Blues should have won quite comfortably.

Luke Moody scored the opener when he made no mistake with his second shot after the first one had been saved.  He added the Blues second after several shots had been stopped on the line and he was on hand to poke the ball into the net.

Central pulled a goal back through Dale O’Donoghue and went on to equalise through Ben Grayson.  This encouraged them to really pile on the pressure and the Blues had to struggle hard to stay in the game.

The Blues eventually won the match when Shane Fyles scored from close range.  Central were always dangerous, however, and the Blues had to hang on by the skin of their teeth.  They did so because although their all round team play left a lot to be desired, there were some good individual performances.  In particular, their Man of the Match, battling Joe Harnick, was putting in great, strong tackles all over the pitch and breaking up numerous Central attacks.

The Blues know their team play will have to improve greatly for the final.  However, as they’ve been playing superb football for most of the season, this shouldn’t really be asking too much of them.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Ollie Stowe, Jacob Bellamy and Marvin Weir.

St Martins 0-6 Blues

Before the match started, coach Dave Preece explained exactly where the Blues had gone wrong in their last match and what they needed to do to put things right.  He also pointed out that teams that want to get anywhere have to learn to play with enthusiasm in all weathers and all conditions, not just in fine sunny weather on perfect pitches.  Unfortunately for St Martins, all the Blues players responded in exactly the right way, so that by half time the Blues were 9-0 up.

To even things up a bit for the second half, goalie Billy Zberowski and defender Ollie Stowe took on the striker’s role and striker Luke Moody went in goal.  It didn’t make much difference, however, because the Blues scored a further seven goals, without reply.

Luke Moody, Jake Preece and Blues Man of the Match Ollie Stowe all scored hat tricks and the other goals went to Andy McInnes, Dan Reynolds, Ben Walker, Marvin Weir, Shane Fyles and Billy Zberowski.  The Blues also benefited from receiving their first own goal of the season.

The Blues had been totally committed to this match from the very first minute to the last.  All the players worked hard for each other and there were always players in support.  They weren’t just hungry for goals, they were starving.  If they can carry this level of motivation forward to the end of the season, they have every chance of winning the cup.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody,  Ollie Stowe and Marvin Weir.

 Twyford Spartans 7-4 Blues

On a day when most games were postponed due to waterlogged pitches, the water had to be swept from this one and the referee indicated before starting the match that if the conditions got any worse, he might well have to abandon it at half time.  Brixington Blues were very disheartened and found it so difficult to get going that before they knew it they were 0-4 down against one of the best sides in the league.

Eventually, the Blues pulled a goal back when Shane Fyles scored following a good pass from Joe Harnick.  They then conceded another goal and were 1-5 down at half time.

A great tackle and a well-weighted pass from Harnick enabled Luke Moody to score for the Blues.  Fyles produced another superb corner which was headed on by Moody and driven into the net by Harnick, to make the score 3-5.

Twyfords scored again, but Jake Preece made the score 4-6 with a great shot into the corner of the net following brilliant play by Fyles, who beat three defenders in the tightest of spaces before providing the perfect cross.

The final goal was scored by Twyfords, but the Blues fought hard, right to the end.  Preece  was desperately unlucky when the only way Twyfords could stop him was by conceding a penalty.  He took it himself, only to see the keeper save it, having moved before it was taken.  The retaken kick gave the keeper no chance, but unfortunately went inches wide.

Ollie Stowe did particularly well, coming on as substitute in a difficult match.  He got to grips with his defensive role immediately and provided good support to the midfield in launching the Blues attacks.

Twyfords scorers were Tom Nicholls 3, Jack Burt, Harry Pearce, Josh Searle and Jesse Howe.

The Blues had produced a superb second half display in very difficult conditions, but had given themselves too much to do after such a terrible start.  Their Man of the Match was Shane Fyles.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Ollie Stowe and Marvin Weir.

Blues 5-2 Heavitree Dynamos

Just four days after their cup semi-final victory over Stoke Hill, Brixington Blues produced another tremendous performance to inflict the first league defeat of the season on top of the table Heavitree Dynamos.

The Blues started very slowly, allowing the Dynamos to find their rhythm and take the lead through Matt Miller.  It wasn’t long, however, before Joe Harnick equalised when he tackled strongly, won the ball well, took it on a couple of paces and hit a fierce shot into the net.

Dynamos went ahead again with a goal from Connor Clifford.  But the Blues got back on terms when Dynamo’s keeper fumbled a through ball from Shane Fyles and Luke Moody pounced, to level the score at 2-2.

Fyles and Moody combined well again when Fyles pressurised and tackled a defender and the ball ran loose to Moody, whose fantastic long range shot flew high over the defence and into the net.  So at half time the Blues were 3-2 ahead.

Moody completed his hat trick following a fine through ball from Jake Preece.  The Blues final goal was scored by Ben Walker, who latched onto a cross from the left and found the net with a superb, angled drive from his position on the right.

Although the Blues thoroughly deserved to win this thrilling match with great performances from magnificent players in both teams, they were a little flattered by the margin.  This was due, mainly to the incredible performance of Blues Man of the Match, goalie Billy Zberowski, who denied the league leaders time after time with so many saves he had no right to make.  Well done, Billy!

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Ollie Stowe, Jacob Bellamy and Marvin Weir.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Ollie Stowe, Jacob Bellamy and Marvin Weir.

Hendy Honda Friendly Cup  -  Semi Final

Blues 2-1 Stoke Hill

Brixington Blues secured their place in the cup final at St James’ Park on 14th May with this well-deserved victory over Stoke Hill.  The Blues always knew that this would be much tougher than their recent matches, with goals much harder to come by.

Up against the big, strong Stoke Hill defence, the Blues smaller, nippier attackers, Luke Moody and Shane Fyles used their superior speed to constantly harry the opposition.  They won the ball, passed it on quickly and moved rapidly into space to provide support.  Their work rate was phenomenal and, with excellent support from the midfield of Ben Walker, Jake Preece, Joe Harnick and Dan Reynolds, they created enough chances to score the two goals that took them through to their first cup final.

Meanwhile, the Blues defenders, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ryan Fraser-Roe and Darryn Carpenter-Cossey were giving everything to contain the dangerous Stoke Hill attackers.  They played superbly, particularly in the first half against a swirling wind and an awkwardly bouncing ball.

The Blues took the lead when Moody was first to a loose ball and moved it quickly on to Harnick, who fired it into the net from close range.  They increased their advantage when Moody’s cross reached Walker, who finished well.

The score remained at 2-0 until the last minute of the match.  Liam Streat scored a consolation goal for Stoke Hill, but it was too little, too late.

The Blues had produced a superb, all round team performance to overcome their worthy opponents.  Their Men of the Match were Dan Reynolds, Ben Walker and Shane Fyles, but everyone had been magnificent.

The Blues performances are a glowing tribute to the hard work and quality of the training provided by coach Dave Preece who must be very proud of his team’s achievements.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Ollie Stowe, Jacob Bellamy and Marvin Weir.

Blues 12-0 Exwick

Even though the Blues latest opponents, Exwick, are not the team they were when the Blues had to battle grimly to beat them 4-3 in the cup, this victory had more to do with the sheer brilliance and variety of the Blues passing movements and superb all round team play, together with much more clinical finishing, than with the quality of the opposition.

Although the Blues settled quickly into their rhythm and the passes soon flowed sweetly, several chances came and went before a great corner by Ryan Fraser-Roe was played on by Joe Harnick to Luke Moody, who tucked it away neatly.

Andy McInnes got on the end of a great cross from Dan Reynolds on the left to add goal number two with a well-placed shot.  Next, a long clearance from Harnick was chased down the middle by Shane Fyles, who reacted quickly when his first shot was saved and followed up well to find the net with his second.

After the break, the Blues became unstoppable.  Fyles provided the perfect cross, Ben Walker headed against the bar and Moody headed in the rebound.  A superb pass from Owen Newson beat a defender for a great shot from Walker to take the tally to five.

Jake Preece then made no mistake with a well-placed shot after Walker had pulled the ball back across the middle.  A long ball from Fraser-Roe was then passed back by Walker , allowing Jacob Bellamy to get on the score sheet.  Moody completed his hat trick following another great cross, this time from Preece.

Central defender Lewie Farrant scored his first goal of the season when his penalty kick gave the keeper no chance.  Up popped Moody again with a delightful chip over the keeper’s head.  Shortly after, he scored his fifth and final goal, following a well-weighted through pass from Preece.

The Blues completed their scoring when Newson smashed the ball into the net after Marvin Weir’s shot was saved.

Moody was the Blues Man of the Match.  Not only did he work very hard for his five goals, he also put the defenders under constant pressure and helped to create several openings for his colleagues, too.

Sidmouth 0-10 Blues

Brixington Blues were in commanding form again, this time at the expense of Sidmouth.

They took an early lead when Ben Walker chased an apparently lost cause but didn’t lose it, won the ball and pulled it back across the goal, for Luke Moody to slot in the opener.  Jake Preece then latched onto a through ball from Shane Fyles and made no mistake with the finish.  Next, the Sidmouth defence battled gamely to withstand intense pressure on their goal, but after several goal line clearances, a shot from Joe Harnick finally beat them.  The first half finished with something special, a super, high, dipping volley from Fyles to put the Blues 4-0 up at the break.

Soon after the second half started, the Sidmouth defence failed to clear another superb corner from Ryan Fraser-Roe and Blues defender Andy McInnes was on hand to take advantage.  Preece scored his second following a pass from Owen Newson and Walker then added goal number seven.

Next, Moody laid the ball back well for Marvin Weir to finish strongly.  Fraser-Roe sent a long, high, first time shot sailing just under the bar where no keeper would have saved it.

Blues goalie Billy Zberowski, wanting a little bit more of the action, handed the keeper’s jersey to Fyles and went up front in search of number ten.  After displaying some neat outfield skills, his persistence paid off when the Sidmouth keeper saved his first shot, but was helpless when he followed up to ram the ball into the net and conclude the scoring.

Sidmouth deserve credit for a spirited performance.  They fought hard to make many successful goal line clearances, but couldn’t stem the tide of another superb all round Blues display.

Andy McInnes and Joe Harnick shared the Blues Man of the Match award for their outstanding contributions.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, and Marvin Weir.

Blues 7-2 Pinhoe
Cup

Brixington Blues were firing on all cylinders in this highly entertaining quarter-final cup tie against Pinhoe.

Sam Metters took advantage of a lapse in the Blues defence to give Pinhoe an early lead, against the run of play.  It wasn’t long, however, before Shane Fyles produced a strong shot from the edge of the area to equalise for the Blues.  Luke Moody then slotted home a great pass from Ryan Fraser-Roe, and Jake Preece took advantage of a superb long throw in by Joe Harnick to add goal number three.  Harnick then scored with a great cross shot from the right, following a superb cross from Dan Reynolds, out wide on the left.

Justin Boult then scored Pinhoe’s second, but the Blues pressed home their advantage when Tom West won the ball with a strong tackle, took it on, refused to be knocked off it and finished well for his first goal for the Blues.

Moody, who is now right back in the goals again, added his second when he turned in a perfect free kick from Preece.  He then completed his hat trick by turning in another super pass, again from Preece, this time a cross from the right flank.

This was a sparkling all round team performance by the Blues, with plenty of goals to go with the glorious football and stout defending.  Three of the defenders, Lewie Farrant, Ryan Fraser-Roe and Andy McInnes shared the Blues Man of the Match award, but it could have gone to almost anyone.

Pinhoe also had some very good players and produced some excellent football, but this was Blues at their very best.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Tom West, Jacob Bellamy and Marvin Weir.

Blues 1-2 West Exe

With several fixtures postponed since Christmas, this was only the Blues third game in the last 10 weeks.  This lack of match practice showed, particularly in front of goal, where the Blues are now finding it so much harder to turn more of the many chances they create into goals.

Just to add to the difficulties, Joe Harnick, who has been in sparkling form for most of the season, was unable to start the match through injury.  He did come on later, however, and scored the opening goal, courtesy of a great defence-splitting pass from Tom West, making his debut and contributing more and more as the game went on.

This was a great game of football between two evenly-matched sides determined to settle for nothing less than a victory.  Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ryan Fraser-Roe and Darryn Carpenter-Cossey in the Blues defence were outstanding, and goalkeeper Billy Zberowski, the Blues Man of the Match, was even better, pulling off a string of superb saves to keep West Exe at bay until half way through the second half.  Then their persistence paid off when they equalised through Luke Schofield.

Both sides went for the winner, which was eventually scored by Jake Hopton for West Exe .  Luke Moody was desperately unlucky not to equalise for the Blues, but with Ben Walker and Carpenter-Cossey both having to leave the field injured, this just wasn’t going to be their day.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Tom West, Jacob Bellamy and Marvin Weir.

Blues 4-3 Exwick

Exeter Friendly Cup Round 2

Well done, boys, all of you in both teams!  Thanks for treating us to a footballing feast which had everything that English cup ties are renowned for.  Effort, skill, determination, strength, passion, emotion and courage.  Tackling, passing, control, movement, interceptions, shooting, goalkeeping and end to end football of such quality – the future of English football must be safe while we have youngsters coming through producing such performances!

Exwick opened the scoring when a superb low cross swerved viciously through the Blues defence and was dispatched by Joey Pacher-burn.  The Blues were soon back on terms, however, when Joe Harnick picked up the ball and shot well to find the target.

Now it was Blues turn to go ahead, but it would take something special and it got it.  Shane Fyles moved the ball on to Owen Newson who sent a great pass into the middle where the bravest player, prepared to get hurt, would win the ball for his side.  That player was Jake Preece and he did get hurt, but it didn’t stop him from scoring.

Shortly after the second half started a brilliant long, high shot from Preece increased the Blues lead.  Exwick were far from finished, however, and Tom Baxter made it 3-2.

The Blues knew the match was not yet won and they had to keep up the pressure.  Fyles won the ball again and put Harnick through on a strong run, brushing aside all challenges and finishing with a hard, low drive into the corner of the net.

Exwick proved they were still a threat, when Pacher-burn completed the scoring.  The Blues had done enough, however, to move on to the quarter-finals.

The Blues Man of the Match award was shared by two players who not only had outstanding games, but also showed exceptional courage.   Joe Harnick in playing when not fully recovered from his illness and refusing to leave the field, despite his increasing dependency on his inhaler.  And Jake Preece with that memorable goal.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, and Marvin Weir.

Cullompton 0-4 Blues

It was surprising that Brixington Blues could play such good all round football in their first match for six weeks.

The defence of Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ryan Fraser-Roe and Ollie Stowe was so strong that goalkeeper Billy Zberowski hardly touched the ball throughout the match.

Dan Reynolds, Jake Preece, Joe Harnick and Jacob Bellamy controlled the midfield and again created plenty of openings.

Front runners Ben Walker and Luke Moody were a constant threat and substitutes Shane Fyles, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Owen Newson and Marvin Weir all made good contributions.

Moody worked hard for the opening goal and took it well when it came.  There was real quality in the passing which started when substitute Fyles first touched the ball, won it well and moved it on quickly for Newson to score number two.  Weir then won the ball and another superb passing movement resulted in the third goal, scored by Preece.  Fyles then completed the scoring with a long shot which deceived the keeper.

Credit to Cullompton who never gave up and finished with a spirited flourish, but couldn’t break down the Blues defence.

The Blues Man of the Match was Jacob Bellamy, for laying the ball off so well to his colleagues.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Jacob Bellamy and Marvin Weir.

Broadclyst 0-1 Blues

Brixington Blues succeeded in returning to their winning ways at Broadclyst, although they did make rather heavy weather of it.

The first half saw the Blues playing some great football.  Their defence stifled all their opponents attacks, their midfield created plenty of openings and the front runners got in shot after shot.

The Blues goal came from a superb passing movement involving Shane Fyles, Lewie Farrant and Ben Walker, whose perfect cross from the right flank was driven into the net by Owen Newson.

Half time arrived with the Blues wondering why they only had a single goal to show for all their efforts.

The second half was much the same with many more shots and many more misses from the Blues.  Broadclyst then realised that in spite of everything they only needed a single goal to gain a share of the points.  They fought back hard, but were well contained by the Blues defence which was determined not to concede any points.

The Blues Man of the Match was Ben Walker, for his strong runs down the right flank which caused panic in the Broadclyst defence.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson,  Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Marvin Weir.

Blues 1-2 Stoke Hill

This match was always going to be a severe test for the Blues and when Stoke Hill scored, early in the game, with an opportunist shot out of the blue and against the run of play, the Blues were facing an uphill battle.

Once they’d got their noses in front, Stoke Hill defended with all their might.  Despite the difficulties, however, the Blues still played some great football and controlled the play for much of the match.  All their pressure finally paid off when Jake Preece equalised from the penalty spot.

The Blues continued to create lots of openings and managed to get plenty of shots at goal.  Unfortunately, however, over-anxiety with their shooting meant that many of these shots were not on target and those that were, were capably dealt with by the outstanding Stoke Hill keeper, who was far busier than his Blues counterpart.

Having soaked up all this pressure, Stoke Hill then showed their great resilience by coming back to score the winning goal.  So despite battling bravely, never giving up and being in charge for much of the match, the Blues didn’t make the most of their chances and Stoke Hill rode their luck on the day, to come away with all the points and leave the Blues with their first defeat of the season.

All the Blues players should be proud of their performance and Lewie Farrant was their Man of the Match for a superb display at the heart of their defence.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson, Jacob Bellamy, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Marvin Weir.

 Blues 9–5 Honiton Town

Blues back to winning ways as Lever hits three

Blues bounced back with a win after their first league defeat last week. But visitors Honiton Town made them fight for this victory with a stubborn performance of their own.

Blues started well with Aaron Dawson looking dangerous down the left and it was Dawson dribbling in to the box who opened the scoring finishing well with a low drive. Honiton carried a threat with their quick forwards in particular the Gardiner twins. The visitors used them well and blues were left stunned when Honiton scored two quick fire goals in as many minutes to lead 2 – 1. Blues were soon on level terms when Dawson once again this time down the right raced in to the box and his shot beat the keeper. This see - saw game continued as Honiton unlocked the blues defence again to take the lead 3 – 2. Soon after they could have extended their lead as Blues keeper Ollie Kitchen was beaten by a shot but thankfully he saw the ball hit the foot of the post.  Blues came back to draw level when midfielder Liam Ellis combined well with Mark Lever who coolly sent his left foot drive past the keeper.  But Honiton again got their noses in front as this amazing first half continued. Yet again blues responded when Dawson jinxed his way in to the box only to be upended by a Honiton defender Lever despatched the resulting spot kick. Blues finished the half much the stronger Sam Bird chased the ball down in the visitors area and when the ball finally broke free Ellis was on hand to smash the ball home from the angle of the box. To give the blues the lead 5 – 4  at half time.

Second half blues seemed to step up a gear as Brixington kept the pressure on Honiton as the visitors struggled to get out of their own half. The sustained pressure finally paid off as substitute Adam Croft raced into the box the make it 6 – 4. Blues continued to push forward Ellis sent over a corner which Lever’s header was cleared off the line Blues then did manage to put real daylight between the two teams another delivered cross by Ellis which caused panic in the Honiton defence the ball fell to defender Ian Perkins who scored from close range. The game was a real contrast compared to the first half Lever grabbed his hat-trick picking up the ball just inside the box and his right foot drive beat the keeper. Dawson set up number 9 with a pinpoint cross for bird to head home. There was still time for Honiton to grab a fifth.

Brixingon’s second half performance showed the strong character of the team winning with a bit to spare in the end. Credit to Honiton they certainly contributed to a highly entertaining game. Man of the match award went to Sam Bird for his overall work rate.

Next week blues are away to Pinhoe Youth

Team: - Oliver Kitchen, Paul Millar, Hugo Demetre, Ian Perkins, Jordon Javadi, Joe Poulten, Liam Ellis, Mark Lever, Michael Cope, Sam Bird, Aaron Dawson, Adam Croft. Adam Cornish, Tim Green .

Blues 7-1 Heavitree Hammers

Brixington Blues found it difficult to get going in this match and allowed the Hammers far too much time and space throughout the opening half.  In spite of their early problems, however, the Blues took the lead when a fine string of passes went from Jake Preece to Luke Moody and on to Joe Harnick, who made no mistake with the finish.

The Blues went further ahead when Ben Walker received a nicely weighted pass from Preece, to score his first.  The Hammers pulled a goal back, but then Walker added his second after Lewie Farrant had split the defence with a good pass through the middle.

The second half saw a big improvement in the Blues as they started playing much better football and took control of the game.  Dan Reynolds cut in from the right flank and lashed the ball into the net.  Then Moody, who never stops battling, hastled the keeper into losing the ball and fired in goal number five.

Shane Fyles came on as a substitute and made a big impact on the game.  First, he hooked the ball home following another superb corner from Ryan Fraser-Roe.  Then he scored his second, following a great through pass from Preece, and was unlucky not to complete his hat trick shortly after that.  As a result, he well deserved his Blues Man of the Match award.

After a disappointing first half, the Blues had finished very strongly.  They could, in fact, have scored several more goals from all the good chances they created after the break.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson, Jacob Bellamy, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Marvin Weir..

 Blues 9-2 Hemyock

A superb all round team performance saw Brixington Blues beat a spirited Hemyock side who refused to let their heads drop in spite of the Blues overwhelming pressure and passing of the highest order.

Ryan Fraser-Roe opened the scoring for the Blues with a superbly struck corner which floated into the six yard box, before swerving violently past the Hemyock keeper into the net.

The persistent Luke Moody then followed up his own shot twice to finally hammer the ball home, and scored his second when he out-jumped everyone to head another super corner from Fraser-Roe into the net.

Ben Walker applied the finishing touch to a great cross from Owen Newson on the left.  Joe Harnick then started and finished a move, finding the net following another excellent cross from Newson.

Moody made a strong run through the middle and fired the ball home to complete his hat trick.  Hemyock were rewarded for refusing to give in when they scored their first, but Moody took his tally to four, following a super cross from Marvin Weir.

Hemyock pulled the score back to 7 – 2 before Harnick found the net with a good, low strike.  Finally, Dan Reynolds ran the ball in from the right wing at speed and hammered it past a helpless keeper who had given everything and performed heroically throughout the match.

There was a long line of worthy candidates for the Blues Man of the Match, which was shared by Reynolds and Newson for the string of superb crosses coming from the right and left wings respectively.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Lewie Farrant, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson, Jacob Bellamy, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Marvin Weir.

 Pinhoe  0-6 Blues

The awful weather and muddy conditions did not prevent Brixington Blues from recording another victory, this time at the expense of Pinhoe.

The absence of central defender Lewie Farrant, normally the rock at the heart of the Blues defence, was overcome by moving Darryn Carpenter-Cossey into the middle, closely supported by Ryan Fraser-Roe, with Andy McInnes and Ollie Stowe outside them.  The result was a very strong back four which prevented most of the Pinhoe attacks from developing into any kind of threat and provided a launch pad for many of the Blues attacking moves.

Jake Preece played the ball through to Ben Walker who opened the scoring with a great strike.  Some good football then ended with the ball being passed from Preece to Walker and on to Luke Moody, who scored the Blues second.

Goals from Jacob Bellamy and Preece put the result beyond doubt, but Carpenter-Cossey had to clear off his line to enable the Blues to maintain their third consecutive clean sheet.

Owen Newson found the target from outside the box and Joe Harnick completed the scoring with a strong strike, following another good corner from Fraser-Roe.

This was another good team effort in a match which the Blues never looked like losing.  Picking their Man of the Match was easy, because Fraser-Roe had been so outstanding.  Always a skilful, cultured player, he had added a measure of steel to his game and became more and more dominant as the match went on.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Ollie Stowe, Dan  Reynolds, Jake Preece, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson, Jacob Bellamy, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Marvin Weir.

Blues 11-0 Central Reds

Brixington Blues continued their unbeaten run when they dominated this match against Central Reds.  Although they scored one goal less than last week, they actually had even more of the play and created even more openings.  Fortunately for their opponents, however, their less clinical finishing prevented a cricket score, as the number of good scoring chances missed far exceeded those actually taken.

It wasn’t long before a good through pass from Lewie Farrant enabled Luke Moody (as if you didn’t know) to open the scoring.  Next came the Blues and Moody’s second  when a great pass from Joe Harnick was flicked on by Ben Walker.  Harnick then latched onto a corner and scored from the edge of the box.  Moody completed his hat trick and added his fourth, both from excellent passes supplied by Owen Newson, and the Blues were 5-0 up at the break.

The second half saw increased pressure, six more goals and even more misses from the Blues.  A good, low shot gave the next goal to Jacob Bellamy and Dan Reynolds ran the ball in close before tapping home number seven (his first actual league goal for the Club).  Bellamy then scored his second following a great, pacy cross from Reynolds on the right flank, and completed his hat trick when he was first to a loose ball in the box.

A long, strong shot gave Harnick his second and Marvin Weir completed the scoring after a superb passing movement involving several members of the team.

The Blues had shown they are still improving with impressive teamwork and superb individual performances.  Their Man of the Match was Dan Reynolds, for his great skills and his quality passing.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Jake Preece, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson, Jacob Bellamy, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Marvin Weir.

CUP

Blues 12-0 West Hill

Brixington Blues maintained their excellent start to the season with this outstanding victory against West Hill in the cup.

Playing against the wind in the first half, the Blues created several good openings before Ryan Fraser-Roe scored their first goal with a long, low shot just inside the post.  West Hill continued to fight hard and soaked up the pressure well, until the Blues scored two decisive goals just before the break.  First, Jake Preece took a neat pass from Luke Moody and calmly slotted the ball home.  Then Moody picked up a loose ball, took it on and fired into the net.

The second half saw the Blues, with the wind now in their favour, piling on the pressure relentlessly.  They added nine more goals through Joe Harnick (2), Andy McInnes (2), Moody, Ben Walker, Shane Fyles, Preece and Owen Newson.

West Hill never stopped trying, but just couldn’t compete with a Blues side which improves with every match and is developing the discipline and determination to maintain its performance for the whole sixty minutes.

Every player was superb, so it was extremely difficult to pick the Blues Man of the Match.  In the end, however, the award was shared by Lewie Farrant, who again was the rock in the centre of the defence, and Marvin Weir, who only came on as substitute, but excelled in the limited time he spent on the pitch.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Ollie Stowe, Dan Reynolds, Jake Preece, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Owen Newson, Shane Fyles and Marvin Weir.

Bow 4-4 Blues

Brixington Blues played some great football to put themselves 4-2 ahead, away from home, against one of the strongest sides in the league, only to concede two points as their opponents, Bow, fought back to achieve a 4-4 draw.

The Blues early pressure was rewarded when Luke Moody followed up well to open the scoring, but it wasn’t long before Bow had equalised.  Jacob Bellamy then finished well to put the Blues ahead again, and they increased their lead when a perfectly weighted through pass from Jake Preece split the Bow defence enabling Moody to score his second.

Bow reduced the arrears again, but the Blues two-goal lead was restored when Preece’s unstoppable free kick soared high over the wall before dipping late just under the bar giving the keeper no chance at all.

Bow never give in.  They mounted a terrific fight back which enabled them to score two more goals to put them level at 4-4.  The Blues didn’t give in, either, and thought they would regain the lead when the referee awarded them a penalty after a Bow defender had handled the ball, only to see the decision changed on the intervention of the linesman.

Even then, the Blues should have clinched all three points when a superb cross shot from the left flank was entering the net, but a luckless Blues forward unfortunately slipped and handled the ball, so the goal was disallowed.

As well as playing some super football, the Blues showed great spirit.  Every player fought really hard to overcome the setbacks, but none more so than Blues Man of the Match, Joe Harnick.   Once again he ran his socks off, tackled hard both in midfield and defence and created some great openings with his telling passes.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Andy McInnes, Joe Harnick, Jake Preece, Ollie Stowe, Jacob Bellamy, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Owen Newson.

 Blues 9-1 West Hill

Brixington Blues ran out comfortable winners against a West Hill side weakened by the absence of several players and only just able to field eleven.

The Blues scored an early goal through Joe Harnick and Luke Moody soon added the second.  Next it was Owen Newson scoring his first goal for the Club.

West Hill kept plugging away and were rewarded when a goal from Eddie Kerr reduced the deficit.  It wasn’t long, however, before the Blues added further goals through Marvin Weir and Moody, to lead 5-1 at half time.

The opening period of the second half was much more even, until Jake Preece put the Blues further ahead from the penalty spot and they took control again.  Harnick then added his second goal before Moody took the total to eight in completing his hat trick, and went on to finish the scoring with his fourth.

At times the Blues had played some great football, but at other times they stopped passing.  Overall they did a good job.  They know, however, that they will have to move the ball around a lot more and use the flanks much more effectively to succeed against the better teams.

Luke Moody was the Blues Man of the Match.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Shane Fyles, Joe Harnick, Jake Preece, Oli Stowe, Jacob Bellamy, Dan Reynolds, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Owen Newson and Marvin Weir.

United 2-2 Blues

This season-opener was the first time the two Brixington sides had played a competitive 11-a-side league match on a full-sized pitch with an official referee in charge of the proceedings.  It was also their first match where the offside and pass back rules both applied.

Both teams worked hard to cope with these new conditions and both should be well pleased with their performances.

United had the better of the first half and deservedly took a two-goal lead through Jake Collinson and Howard Smith.  Shortly before half time, however, Luke Moody pulled a goal back for the Blues.

The second half was a reversal with Blues on the ascendancy, but United still played well, so Blues had to work hard for their well-earned equaliser, again scored by Moody.

The two Blues debutants, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey and Owen Newson both played well, as did goalie Billy Zberowski, Luke Moody, Lewie Farrant and Ryan Fraser-Roe.  Blues Man of the Match, however, was midfielder Joe Harnick – he never stopped running and covered nearly every blade of grass on a very large pitch!

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Ryan Fraser-Roe, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Jake Preece, Oli Stowe, Jacob Bellamy, Dan Reynolds, Ben Walker, Luke Moody, Darryn Carpenter-Cossey, Owen Newson and Marvin Weir.

Cullompton Rangers 6-a-side Football Tournament (U11’s)

Playing in their final football tournament of the season, Brixington Blues started their Group B matches well by beating Cullompton Rangers 2-1.  Joe Harnick scored both the goals.

The next game was against Somerton Stars.  After a tightly contested first half, the Blues marking became increasingly loose.  They allowed their opponents more and more space and were eventually punished by the only goal of the match.

The Blues then put on a terrific performance against Moors Youth ‘B’.  Playing some great football they dominated throughout, creating chance after chance, but failing to find the net.   Plain bad luck plus great goalkeeping resulted in a 0-0 draw and showed that this was not going to be their tournament.

Now they came up against Twyford Spartans ‘A’, the best team in a very strong group. The Blues played well in a very close match, but eventually Twyfords scored the only goal.

In their final match the Blues met Woolwell, another strong side.  Both teams played good football in another great contest and the goalless draw was a fair result.  Unfortunately, the game was marred by a knee injury to Blues’ central defender, Lewie Farrant.  Lewie was taken to hospital, but the extent of the damage is still not known and further tests are required this week.  All his colleagues wish him a speedy recovery.

The Blues had played well for most of the tournament and only conceded three goals in five matches.  They didn’t get the breaks, however, and couldn’t put enough of their chances away to progress beyond the group stage.

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Lewie Farrant, Joe Harnick, Andy McInnes, Oli Stowe, Ben Walker, Luke Moody and Marvin Weir.

Newton St Cyres 5-a-side Football Tournament (U11’s)

Brixington Blues started their latest football tournament well by winning their first Group 1 match 2-0, against Crediton Youth B.  The goals were scored by Jake Preece and Ryan Fraser-Roe.

The next game, against AFC Plympton A, was much tougher.  After conceding the first goal, the Blues fought back to equalise through Jacob Bellamy and earn a 1-1 draw.

The third match, against another good side, Woolwell JFC A, followed exactly the same pattern. Again the Blues fell behind, but again they fought back to draw 1-1, when Preece made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Their final group match against Pinhoe was much easier for the Blues.  Goals from Preece, Bellamy (2) and Fraser-Roe gave them a comfortable 4-0 victory.

This great start to the tournament enabled the Blues to win their group, because although level on points, they had scored eight goals compared with Woolwell’s four.

Unfortunately, going through as winners of Group 1 meant that the Blues had to meet clubmates United in the first semi final.  The Blues form deserted them and a 1-0 victory took United into the final, which they duly won to take the tournament.  Well done United!!

Blues: - Billy Zberowski, Jake Preece, Jacob Bellamy, Andy McInnes, Oli Stowe, Ryan Fraser-Roe and Dan Reynolds.

St Martins 5-a-side Football Tournament (U11’s)

Brixington Blues enjoyed another successful football tournament, this time at St Martins, Exminster. They got their Group A matches off to a good start by beating Exminster Colts 1-0, the goal being scored by Jacob Bellamy.

Next, Ellis Hillman put them ahead against Westexe A, but their opponents fought back to equalise and the match was drawn 1-1.

Their third and final group match was against Exmouth Juniors B and resulted in a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Blues.  The scorers were Luke Moody and Ryan Fraser-Roe (2).

The Blues had won their group decisively by three clear points, but then had the fright of their lives in the quarter final that followed.  Exmouth Juniors A took the lead completely against the run of play and almost succeeded in holding out for a place in the semis.  The Blues had created and missed chance after chance before Fraser-Roe finally levelled from a penalty just seconds before the end of normal time.  The game went into extra time and was eventually settled when the golden goal was scored by Ben Walker for the Blues.

The Blues then won their semi final against Heavitree by the only goal, scored by Bellamy.

On to the final, and another meeting with Westexe A.  This time the Blues concentrated on attack in their quest for goals, but were punished by their opponents when they left themselves exposed.  So Westexe won the match 2-0 and with it, the tournament, but the Blues players were happy to settle for their runners up trophies.

Blues: - Joe Harnick, Jake Preece, Jacob Bellamy, Ellis Hillman, Luke Moody, Ryan Fraser-Roe and Ben Walker

Sidmouth 5-a-side Football Tournament (U11’s)

Although both the Brixington Blues and United teams progressed beyond the first phase of this tournament, neither reached the heights they reached last week at Crediton.

United started their Group 2 matches brightly against Buckland Athletic, and went ahead through Harry Ody.  Although they conceded a late equaliser, this was a good start.

Next, United played their best football of the day and overwhelmed Beacon Knights 4-0 with goals from Liam Wardle (2), Dan Clarke and Marcus Barnett.

Although United battled hard, their next opponents, the eventual tournament winners, Elburton Villa A, beat them 3-0, all the goals coming late.

United then entered the last sixteen and played their second round match against Okehampton A.  Despite looking tired, they still created enough openings to win, but were defeated 1-0 when Okehampton scored from their only chance of the match.  A bit of a flat ending for United after performing well in the group.

The Blues got off to a faltering start, but came back strongly and went into the second round as winners of Group 1.  First, they fought back after going behind against Heavitree Youth, with an equaliser from Jake Preece to draw the match 1-1.

Then they were beaten by AFC Plympton when they conceded the only goal of the match.  Now they needed to fight back strongly to qualify for the next phase.

Sure enough, they responded superbly and beat Sidmouth Town A 1-0, with another goal from Preece.

Their final group match saw another 1-0 victory.  This time their victims were Twyfords B and their scorer was Ryan Fraser-Roe.

The Blues then won their second round match 2-1, against Okehampton B.  Fraser-Roe scored both their goals before Okehampton pulled one back.

Next, to their quarter final against Okehampton A.  They secured their place in the semis when Preece scored the only goal of the match.

Just one step from the final, but alas a step too far.  They failed to find their best form and were beaten 1-0 by Elburton Villa A, who went on to win their next match against Twyfords A and clinch the tournament.

United: -  Dean Rawlings, Dan Clarke, Liam Wardle, Marcus Barnett, Harry Ody, Matt Plowman and Guy Clifford-Harding

Colyton 6-a-side Football Tournament (U11’s)

Defensive lapses caused the combined Brixington Blues/United team to lose their opening League A match 0-2 against Seaton, who won all their four games in heading the group.

Brixington then beat Beacon Knights 3-0, thanks to goals from Marvin Weir (2) and Howard Smith.

The next match against Exmouth A was closely contested and ended in a goal-less draw.

Finally, Luke Moody scored the goal which beat Colyton B 1-0 and Brixington proceeded to the quarter finals as the second of the four qualifiers from their group.

Unfortunately, a defensive error gifted Sidmouth the only goal of an entertaining, closely contested match.  Brixington never gave up and Moody was extremely unlucky not to find the target with at least one of several very close efforts. Goalie Dan Clarke made more great saves, as in some of the previous matches, and the team deserved to progress to the semis, but sadly it didn’t quite happen.

Crediton 6-a-side Football Tournament (U11’s)

The Brixington Blues and United teams were even more successful in this year’s tournament than they were last year.  They totally dominated the day, both proceeded to the quarter finals as winners of their groups and both advanced beyond the semis to make the final an all-Brixington affair.

The Blues played well and dominated their opening Group 1 match against Westexe, but only drew 0-0.

Next, they produced a battling display to beat Okehampton B by a single goal, scored by Ben Walker.

A great performance saw the Blues beat Crediton A 1-0, with Jacob Bellamy the scorer.

Finally, they totally outplayed Bow and won 4-0 with a hat trick from Joe Harnick and another goal from Walker .

The Blues started their quarter final slowly, but improved to win well against Crediton B, the only goal being scored by Shane Fyles.

The semi final saw a brilliant performance from the Blues, playing and beating Bow again, this time 2-0.  Bellamy and Harnick were the scorers.

Meanwhile, United started their Group 2 matches with a 2-0 victory over Crediton B, with goals from Ben Pratt and Liam West.

Heavitree, their next opponents, were beaten 1-0 as Matt Plowman scored his first goal for United.

Next came a 1-1 draw against Okehampton A with another goal from Pratt.

United’s group matches ended with a 2-1 win against Twyford, the goals coming from Marcus Barnett and West.

West scored both the goals in United’s 2-0 quarter final victory over Westexe.

United then won a tense semi final which was 0-0 after extra time, 5-4 on penalties, against a good Crediton side.

The match of the day then took place as the two Brixington teams locked horns in a final played in great spirit.  Harnick opened the scoring for the Blues, but Guy Clifford-Harding equalised for United.  Plenty of thrills and spills were to follow, but neither side could end the deadlock and it was left to penalties to decide the tournament.  The Blues then triumphed by the three goals scored by Fyles, Bellamy and Lewie Farrant to the one goal scored by United’s West.

United were fantastic today, but ended up congratulating Blues on winning the tournament.

Congratulations go to all the players on both sides and the two managers, Dave Preece of Blues and Andy Rawlings of United, together with both sets of parents, for a wonderful day for the Brixington Club.

Twyford Spartans 6-a-side Football Tournament (U11’s)

Brixington Blues’ woes began even before the tournament started when goalkeeper Billy Zberowski and family were held up at Cardiff Airport , on returning from their half-term holiday.
