The game started off with Brixington attacking well.  A throw-in by Godbeer was kicked by Szypillo to mid-field followed by good passing between White, Price and McPhee.  White had a couple of shots at goal just going wide.  A goal kick from Forster to Szypillo saw Szypillo take a spectacular shot at goal from just over the half-way line which flew into the top right-hand corner of the net straight past the Crediton goalkeeper for Brixington’s first goal.  Another attack saw Price tackling well in front of the goal.  A corner by Godbeer to White passed back to Godbeer for a shot which was just wide of goal.  Good attacking play between White, McPhee and Price.  Good teamwork between McClure and Szypillo in defence led to quick passing between White and McPhee on the attack.  Crediton then attacked following their throw-in and a shot at goal just slipped under Forster for Crediton’s first goal.  Two further attacks by Crediton were saved by Forster and good cover in defence by McClure and Szypillo partnership.  Good strong tackling by McClure led to attack by White down the right-hand side.  Crediton counter-attack was stopped between McClure and Szypillo who quickly passed to Price who was unlucky to have an attempt at goal saved by the Crediton goalkeeper coming out of goal.

The second half saw good attacking partnership between White, Whiller and Anderson which resulted in a shot going wide of goal.  Excellent dribbling by Whiller saw another shot on target but was unfortunately saved.

Good, solid, defensive play by Szypillo and Godbeer, who both took bad knocks but got back to great tackling once back in the game.  Anderson was subbed for Price who took his place up front.  High kick by Alphington was too much for goalkeeper Forster and Alphington scored for third time.  Brixington were not disheartened and a long shot by Szypillo found its way through the Alphington defence.  Following a good kick by Forster, Whiller  passed the ball to Cockayne who volleyed to ball into the back of the net for Brixington’s first goal.   Good display shown by Brixington against an experienced side.  The game finished with a 3 – 1 win for Alphington.

MORE PROGRESS FOR THE BRIXINGTON BLUES U 8 S

MOORS YOUTH FC ANNUAL YOUTH FOOTBALL COMPETITION

On a fantastic Sunday in Tiverton we participated in the second of four football competitions we are entered into throughout the summer. We had agreed to enter these events in order to continue with our first season ‘s efforts and get ready for the new season.

The tournament was very well organised with some good teams covering three groups of five. The top two qualified with the two best third place teams making up the quarterfinals.

We started our group games with a comfortable 3 – 0 win over Sampford. After controlling the opening minutes Callum McClurg opened the scoring with an excellent strike. Two more quick goals followed , one from David Cockayne and a fine solo run and finish from Joshua Whiller finished the game.

The second group game was against a well-organised Twyford team and both sides played out a well-earned goalless draw, which kept the momentum going.

The third game put us up against Pinhoe Pumas who like us had not lost. Our lads seem to sense these big games and produced their best football, working very hard for each other and passing the ball accurately and at pace. Arnold Godbeer opened the scoring which capped a very good game for him and his goal celebration matched his performance. The second came from Josh Whiller after applying the pressure on the defence to win the ball and then score.

Having qualified for the second phase we still wanted to maintain our performances and grinded out a one nil win over the hosts Moors youth. The winning goal coming from David Cockayne who was denied twice on the line with strikes but then put the ball in with his third effort.

Having won the group I must also mention the defensive performances, as the team had not conceded a goal in the group phases.

Joe Forster in goal who maintained a good level of concentration particularly in the early games where he was not called on very early but still made excellent saves when they were needed after a quiet period.

Also the central defence of Alex Szypillo who was very disciplined at the back not chasing the ball and making that all important tackle to break down attacks. This allowed the side to attack with confidence knowing they would not get caught at the back.

There was a debut performance from Callum Mc Clurg who got involved early with he’s new teammates and passed the ball well, playing simple balls.

Playing all over the pitch was Michael White who starts running from the first minute of the first game to the last minute of the QF. Well done Michael

A final word going to Callum Mcphee who picked up a slight injury in the first game, although not at all serious after playing a small role in the second game in defence we decided he would not continue in the tournament. Obviously disappointed, he remained very much involved in team tactics and encouraged right up to the end, well done Callum.

The Quarter Final saw us play a third place team Dulverton, Unfortunately we lost this game 2 –1. After taking the lead in the first half through Arnold Godbeer we conceded straight from a corner with a deflection. After looking for a winner we   got caught on a break away with the shot taking a deflection and wrong footing Joe in the last minute.

A slightly disappointing end to a great day, but the side performed excellently which the parents and most importantly the players themselves enjoyed.

Well done lads, our next tournament is at Newton St Cyres on the 10 th July. I will keep you up dated.

The Squad:- Joe Forster, David Cockayne, Alex Szypillo, Arnold Godbeer, Joshua Whiller, Callum Mc Clurg, Callum McPhee, Michael White
