Broadclyst ‘Sport in the Community’ (U11) Champions

“Blues Top Broadclyst U11’s Tournament”

Skill and commitment enabled the Brixington Blues to record a string of victories against leading U11 teams from Exeter and Plymouth. Playing some delightful football, the Blues took the Broadclyst 6-a-side tournament by storm - winning eight games from nine to top their league, with Tamarside FC running a close second. A masterful performance in defence from Jordan Bennington, combined with the excellent goal-keeping of Connor Gilby kept conceded goals to minimum. In the centre, the high work rate of Aarron Denny and Jacob Tinsley engineered the momentum needed to force play through to the gifted strike force of Jason Pope, Josh Wadham and Peter Wright who needed no encouragement to power home the goals. The Blues can be proud of the individual skills on display and the determination that they showed to win through against tough competition from Alphington, Broadclyst, Lympstone, Pinhoe, Stokehill and Westexe. Last years U11s Friendly League Cup and South West Region Festival champions, the Blues appear to have lost none of their cutting edge in the closed season. On this form they will prove a formidable challenge to any opposition in the forthcoming season.

Brixington Blues U/11s third successive tournament win.

Following recent successes in the Tywford and Colyton tournaments Brixington Blues U/11 team travelled to Credition for the Crediton Youth FC 6-a-side tournament on Saturday. A total of 15 teams were in the age group. The team were drawn in a difficult group - but rose to meet the challenges and beat teams from:

Kentisbeare, 3-0
Denny 2; Gilhooly.

SAS, 1-0
Wadham.

Pinhoe Lightning, 1-0
Tinsley.

Crediton Saints “B,” 0-0.

The team qualified as top of the group and were drawn in the quarter final against local favourites Crediton Youth A team.  An early goal by Jacob Tinsley settled the team and although Crediton battled hard some quality play by the whole team and a second goal by Jacob Tinsley ensured smooth progress into the semis.

The semi final was against a strong Waldon Athletic team who had also qualified without conceding any goals.  Brixington Blues soaked the early pressure and goals by Aarron Denny and a second by Jacob Tinsley before half time, coupled with an excellent reactive save by keeper Connor Gilby kept the Blues in front.  The second half saw Thomas Evans make a confident break clearing the way for Josh Wadham to add a third goal.  In a dominant display the Blues went on to win 5 – 0 with further goals from Wadham and Evans.

The Final was played in sweltering heat after a long day of football. Drawn against rivals Crediton Saints the Blues team prepared well for a tough game.  Early breaks by Crediton were thwarted by excellent defence by Sebastian Jones and saves by the agile Connor Gilby.  Following a lengthy period of pressure by Brixington it was the constantly improving Jack Gilhooly who fired in a quality goal to put the Blues ahead at half time.  Both teams had it all to play for in the second half. Aarron Denny scored to put the Blues 2 – 0 ahead.  Following the injury to Jacob Tinsley requiring paramedic attention, the Blues’ concentration slipped and a goal by Crediton resulted in an exciting finish to the final.  Fortunately the Blues regained composure and held on to a well deserved 2 – 1 victory.

For coach Simon Denny this was another creditable performance from a well drilled team.  The local reputation of this particular team continues to grow, as does their teamwork, support to each other and their camaraderie.

The Sainsbury U11s Friendly League knockout competition ended in victory for the Brixington Blues against local rivals Lympstone.  With Lympstone kicking off Brixington won the ball back and launched into attack which was quicidy rewarded with only 7 seconds on the clock with a well-executed goal. It was direct, uncomplicated, one-touch football which led to an accurately weighted through-ball from Jacob Tinsley to Aarron Denny who went past the centre half as if he wasn’t there. Lympstone regrouped, battling hard in search of an equalizer, but Brixington continued to drive forward looking to secure that all-important second goal.  For a time, the game was evenly poised as both teams probed each other's defence in what became an exciting end-to-end tussle. Seb Jones, playing out of position, repelled the constant high balls aimed at the Brixington end.  Connor Gilby in the Blues goal showed just what a fine keeper he undoubtedly is, making a excellent save from a trade mark Will Price free kick to deny Lympstone and whenever the otherwise stalwart defence of Harry Douglas, Jordan Bennington and Thomas Evans was breached.  But Lympstone did finally break through for an equalizer, a return drive neatly floated over the head of Gilby, finding the net just under the crossbar.

Going into half time with the game all-square, it was clear that the psychology of the match had shifted.  With their tails up, Lympstone pressured early on, but a resolute Brixington gradually regained their composure and control of the midfield.  Time after time, tireless running and tacking back by Josh Wadham, George Locke, Jack Gilhooly and Tyler Dobinson allowed Brixington to regain possession and take the initiative in this game.  Liam Dickinson and Peter Wright worked hard up-front but were frustrated by a resolute Lympstone, determined not to concede another goal.  However as Lympstone tired, the quality of Brixingtons passing game began to tell and the Blues struck once more to take the lead - another quality drive from Denny that crashed just inside the post.  Lympstone never stopped trying to get back on terms, but the Blues held an edge and went further ahead with their third, and the last goal of the game.  Showing on-the-ball skills that Portugese star Ronaldo would have been proud of, Tinsfey adroitly dribbled passed three defenders before thumping home a thunderous 'Roy of the Rovers' drive that put the game beyond any doubt.  Just before the final whistle, a Denny chip then clipped the bar.  Lympstone had fought hard, but ultimately just couldn't contain the all round strength-in-depth of the Blues.  Although the win deservedly went to Brixington, the real victory was in the quality of the football on display and in the fine competitive sprit in which the match was played.  Both teams had acquitted themselves admirably, producing a highly entertaining U11s Cup Final.  Well played Lympstone, but congratulations to Friendly League Cup champions Brixington.

U11’s South West Region Football Festival

“Brixington U11s Festival Champions”

Over the recent bank holiday local heroes Brixington Blues took on teams drawn from all over the country to win the coveted inter-region “Football Festival” prize for the South West. Touring sides from Avon , East Sussex and Staffordshire just couldn’t match the skill and determination of the Blues, who topped their league as the only unbeaten side in the competition. In the opening match, Brixington eased passed the eventual tournament runners up Avon Athletic with a 4-2 win. Jacob Tinsley (2) gave Blues a narrow first half lead, Avon having pulled one back just before the break. Avon threatened to equalize, but a masterful performance from Connor Gilby made the all-important saves, timing his runs and tackling at the edge of the box when called upon. Goals from Aarron Denny and Sebastian Jones then secured the win - but only after the Blues had conceded a second goal by way of a penalty. The second match against Lewes Bridge from East Sussex finishes with the same score line, but proved a very different kind of game. As the match progressed, the Blues finally began to settle and gain more confidence with the unfamiliar 11-a-side format on a full full-size pitch. The defensive line of Jordan Bennington, Thomas Evans and Harry Douglas gradually began to reassert their quality. From this solid base a resurgent Blues then never looked back. With Denny, Jones or Tinsley freed to recycle and pressure through from the midfield, George Locke, Jack Gilhooly, Josh Wadham and Tyler Dobinson made darting runs that turned the opposition defence, allowing Peter Wright, Liam Dickinson and Connor Breslan to threaten upfront. Goals from Denny (2), Locke and then Dickinson then sealed the Blues’ second win of the day.

Day two of the Tournament saw the teams struggling with blustery conditions as well as each other. However, relishing the new freedom afforded by the larger pitch, the Blues increasingly showed all the natural ball skills and understanding of the game that this squad has in abundance. Controlled passing at pace simply tore through the Moorcroft Raiders from the Midlands . Goals from Wadham (2), Denny (2) and then Wright put this game well beyond doubt at an early stage. However, if elegant passing skills characterized the first match of the day, the next game against Bristol Spartak could not have been more different. Strong physical challenges and a sequence of offside decisions broke up the flow of play, reducing to a disappointing nil-nil draw, what might otherwise have been another win for Brixington. Nevertheless the Blues still topped their league coming into day three, but with only a single point advantage only another win in the final match would secure the cup. And the Blues didn’t disappoint - but against a determined Staffordshire side Aldridge FC, they were forced to battle hard. Holding the majority of possession and recycling well, the Blues literally camped inside their opponents’ half for much of this game. Chance after chance came but went begging, the crowd losing count of the number of times the ball cannoned off the woodwork. But a single majestic strike from Wadham near the end finally secured the much-needed victory and gifted the Blues the Festival Cup. Having played five, won four and drawn one - scoring fourteen goals while conceding only four, the Blues had convincingly won through the deserved champions in this tough, well-organised tournament. Top scorer for the tournament and Blues’ captain Aarron Denny, rightfully stepped up to claim the coveted  ‘Football Festival’ trophy, lifting it high to the delight of the home crowd. Having been beaten only once this season, on this run form, the Blues match against Lympstone in the local Sainsbury’s Friendly League Cup final on May 13th at St. James Park should prove an interesting spectacle.

Blues 4-0 Exwick

“Denny Double helps Blues to Cup Final”

Both teams battled hard against blustery conditions, but spells of competent, controlled play by the Blues saw them take an early lead, Aarron Denny firing home an unstoppable low-driven shot from just outside the box. In search of an equalizer, Exwick then took the game back to the Blues. Absorbing the pressure, Jordan Bennington, Thomas Evans and Harry Douglas worked well together in defence to stifle Exwick’s attempts to get goal-side. Then, with his first touch of the game, sub George Locke struck home the Blues’  second, in an almost carbon copy of the first goal. From the restart, Exwick lost possession and following a good interplay of passes between Sebastian Jones, Jacob Tinsley and Jack Gilhooly, Locke then rose to powerfully head a Denny cross – only to see the ball crash off the crossbar.

The half-time whistle came literally as cold comfort, as Exwick then faced playing into the strong headwind - but with added problem of a two goal deficit. A more composed Blues then went three-up, following more great wing play from Tyler Dobinson, supported by surging runs from Gilhooly cutting in through the centre midfield.  Exwick were then caught out as they tried to push forward, Denny skilfully floating a shot from distance over the goalkeeper into the back of the net. At three up, the Blues never looked back. In control of this game for long periods, the fourth and last goal of the day finally came from Tinsley, who neatly sidestepped his marker to strike home with real panache just before the close. The Blues now go on to meet Lympstone in the final of the U11s Friendly cup competition.

Alphington 1-4 Blues

“Hat-trick March hair raiser”

A superb hat-trick from Peter Wright and a well-deserved goal from man of the match Jacob Tinsley saw Brixington Blues secure another good away win. A determined Alphington worked had to stay in contention but their hard work and enterprise couldn’t match the Blues all round competency in defence and attack. After an initial period of midfield sparring, the Blues began to spread the Alphington defence wide, deep crosses from Tyler Dobinson creating opportunities. An accurate ball picked out Wright who, with his back to goal, turned adroitly to volley home passed a stunned Alphington defence. Searching for the equalizer Alphington strove all the harder – but their efforts at coming forward were thwarted by the combination of Jack Gilhooly, Sebastian Jones and Aaron Denny. Recycling possession in midfield released Jacob Tinsley and Dobinson to make penetrating runs that stretched an increasingly troubled defence. Threading the ball neatly between the two central defenders Tinsley then made, and scored, the Blues’ second with an unstoppable drive that arrowed low and inside the post. With the commanding presence of Connor Gilby behind the defensive trio of Harry Douglas, Jordan Bennington and Thomas Evans all making fine saving tackles when called upon, at two goals up a comfortable Blues victory looked odds-on. But the undaunted commitment of Alphington to break through was finally rewarded as the Blues conceded just before the break.

From the restart the edginess that had crept into the Blues play at the end of the first half was removed as more driving runs from Tinsley now operating with some freedom through the centre helped inspire the Blues to step up another gear. Back in control of their own passing play and maintaining possession, the Blues penned Alphington back. On another surging run and following a neat one-two, Tinsley then threaded a ball through to Wright who switched feet to neatly place a low drive inside the near post passed the reach of the diving keeper. Following a similar move - this time inspired by Dobinson - Wright then curved a left foot shot inside the far post for his third and the Blues fourth. There then followed a barrage of strikes on goal, the ball hitting the post, looping just wide of the post, just over the bar or scrambled away in front of goal. Before the final whistle, Liam Dickinson and Connor Breslan both went close. Playing within themselves for much of this game, the Blues had nonetheless managed to secure a comfortable win. Having been beaten only once on the opening match of this season.

Squad : Jordan Bennington, Connor Breslan, Aarron Denny, Liam Dickinson, Tyler Dobinson, Tim Dunn, Harry Douglas, Thomas Evans, Connor Gilby, Jack Gilhooly, Sebastian Jones, George Locke, Jacob Tinsley, Peter Wright, Josh Wadham.

Blues 1-0 Pinhoe Lightening

“Pinholed” by the Blues”

Brixington Blues held on to a single goal advantage to run out winners in this hard fought quarterfinal cup-tie. In the first half, chances fell to both sides but without success until a hard struck through-ball from Jacob Tinsley found Sebastian Jones - who wrong-footed the diving Pinhoe keeper to snatch an early lead for the Blues. Pinhoe pressured looking for the equalizer, but the Blues held firm and began to establish a stranglehold over possession. Thomas Evans, Jordan Bennington, Jack Gihooly and Harry Douglas recaptured play whenever Pinhoe threatened, establishing a stranglehold over possession that freed Tyler Dobinson and Aaron Denny to carve through the midfield. But the Blues’ enterprising play wasn’t converted – a series of shots on goal drifting just wide. On a jinking run, it then looked like George Locke had finally found the key to the Pinhoe defence, but he too was denied – drawing a fine save from the Lightenings’ keeper.  Although the Blues continued to force the pace of play, the second goal continued to allude them and for a time the game hung in suspense with half-time coming as a welcome break in the mounting tension.

Soon after the restart, the Blues nearly put the game beyond doubt as Liam Dickinson turned his marker, only to see his shot gathered in safely. Denny and Tinsley also went close again, but their well-struck shots looped wide of the mark. Peter Wright then rose to meet a Dobinson corner, his powerful header unfortunately finding the arms of the surprised but grateful keeper. The Blues were then nearly caught on the break, Connor Gilby successfully narrowing the angle to force a Pinhoe shot high onto the crossbar. As this still reverberated, the ball was rapidly carried back up field - Jones completing the move for the Blues – his power drive crashing off the Pinhoe crossbar at the other end. The game remained agonisingly poised, but the Blues passing play and running movement off the ball had made the crucial difference between the two sides. Having shown great determination the Blues now draw Pinhoe Spartans, Westexe Athletic, or Exwick Youth in the semi-finals.

Blues 5-1 Sidmouth Vikings

“Dogged Blues withstand Viking raids”

Brixington Blues came back from behind to win this hard fought match. In the first half the Vikings withstood wave after wave of attacks but the Blues failed to convert despite recycling well to sustain a continual pressure on the Sidmouth goal. However, standing resolute, the Vikings looked dangerous when raiding out of defence. Although the Blues continued to attack incessantly, it was the Vikings that scored first - a sweeping move starting at the back that was finished with real aplomb - an excellent strike that arrowed ferociously past a diving Connor Gilby. Despite going a goal down the Blues kept their composure and played some patient passing football looking for an opening. Surging into attack once more, a combination of Sebastian Jones and Jacob Tinsley then drove play straight through the Vikings midfield, Tinsley’s shot careening off the crossbar. Following up, Liam Dickinson curled the ball back and just inside the near post for the equalizer. Playing in boggy conditions that stifled any possibility of effective wing play, the two teams then struggled to gain any advantage. Tinsley showed some great individual skill, dribbling at pace to pass four defenders, finishing with a low drive that gave the Blues a narrow lead going into the break.

Early in the second half, Dickinson seized on a half chance to make it three for the Blues after a goalmouth scramble. Soon after, Tim Dunn unleashed an unstoppable shot from distance to make it four and the Blue’s increasing dominance of this game was becoming apparent.  Following another strike from Tinsley that hit the post this time, there was Dunn to hit in the rebound, making it five. Having gone a goal behind for the third time this season, a dogged first half performance saw the Blues drag themselves back into contention and then secure a narrow lead. In the second half the Blues never looked back - churning out another satisfying win.

Blues 4-1 Hemyock

Sainsbury Friendly League Cup
"Battling Blues overcome Hemyock"

Brixington Blues struggled to overcome a battling Hemyock side whose defensive back line of four frustrated the Blues who started this game playing with a sole striker upfront, with one tucked in behind in support. Determined to expunge their loss to the Blues earlier in the season, Hemyock tackled hard but in good spirit. Encouraged by the new found defensive solidity, their commitment coming forward was soon rewarded. After 20 minutes a long ball looping over the Blues’ midfield was met and finished by a sweet turn and drive that left Connor Gilby in the Blues’ goal no option but to pick the ball out of the back of the net. Redoubling their own effort, the Blues fought hard to get back on terms. Jordan Bennington and Thomas Evans produced some excellent saving tackles in defence, recycling the ball through to Aarron Denny in the centre, or spreading play out to Jacob Tinsley or Tyler Dobinson on the wings. Just after half time Denny eased the tension, powering home an equalizer from distance.

A reformed Blues, now playing with two upfront, looked much more likely to score. Following a series of strikes on goal, the ball finally fell to Tinsley who needed no invitation to strike the ball home to give the Blues a lead for the first time in the match. As the Blues pressured looking to secure the match, Hemyock threatened to equalize on the break, forcing a fine save from Gilby who had to time his run to perfection to rob the finish from a Hemyock striker who had been through on goal. Liam Dickinson, Peter Wright and Harry Douglas all went close for the Blues, but it was Tim Dunn who seized on a rebound to drive home the Blues well deserved third. Immediately before the final whistle, Denny curled in a corner that somehow squirmed in at the near post to make it four for the Blues. Having gone a goal behind, it was good to see the positive response from the Blues and while the score line flattered, the Blues deserved this cup win over Hemyock.

Blues 8-0 St. Martins

Panache of the Blues defeats St. Martins

In their first game of the New Year, the accuracy of the Blues’ passing play eased aside a St. Martins team who struggled to find meaningful possession. Quick into the tackle, the Blues continually regained the initiative in midfield and hence controlled the pattern and pace of the game. The Blues were soon one up, Tim Dunn showing great composure to strike accurately home after a long run that simply carved through the centre of the St. Martins defence. Within seconds of the restart Liam Dickinson made it two, seizing on a deceptive pass from Sebastian Jones to push home at short range. After another driving run up the right wing, Tyler Dobinson provided a pinpoint cross to Jones in the centre, who volleyed home the Blues’ third. Just before half time, a timely interception by Jacob Tinsley in midfield released the ball to Dickinson in front of goal, who turned to produce a clinical finish for his second and the Blues’ fourth.

The second half brought no respite as well-executed passing involving Jordan Bennington, Aarron Denny and Jack Gilhooly continued to switch play, pulling the beleaguered St. Martins defence wide and out of position. Released on the left wing, George Locke cut inside to pick out Dickinson in front of goal who deftly flicked the ball over the diving keeper to make his hat trick and the Blues’ fifth. Gilhooly then made it six with a neatly taken drive from the edge of the box. After a jinking run, Harry Douglas sidestepped the last central defender to strike home with his left, making it seven for the Blues. Dickinson then made it eight without reply just before the close. In a game that was never in doubt St.Martins were simply overwhelmed by a Brixington Blues side that play thoughtful, balanced football, executed with real panache.

Blues 16-0 Central Spitfires

“Hats off to Hat Trick Harry”

Brixington Blues powered home sixteen goals against the Central Spitfires in this first round tie of the Friendly League cup. Both teams struggled in the muddy conditions, but it was the Blues that adapted quickest, while the Spitfires failed to take off. Three early goals came in quick succession for the Blues, the first a Tim Dunn snapshot, the second after Aarron Denny snaked through the Spitfires’ defence to strike home and the third from Peter Wright who volleyed home a Dunn cross. Goal number four came from George Locke after a determined run through the centre. A second goal from Denny and then an elegant strike from Harry Douglas made it six. Douglas then scored again tee’ing up the ball before turning to volley home to make it seven by half time. After the break Douglas scored again deftly chipping the ball beyond the keeper’s despairing reach for his hat trick and the Blues eighth. Wave after wave of attack play led to goals from Dunn, Jack Gilhooly and Tyler Dobinson, Dunn then securing his hat trick and taking the tally to twelve. The Spitfires strove hard throughout, but without much success against sterling defence of Thomas Evans and Jordan Bennington who was next on the score sheet. The Blues continued to bombard the Spitfires goal, Denny making his hat trick, followed by another goal from Wright. Just before the close, Bennington pulled the ball back to Sebastian Jones who struck the Blues sixteenth.

Hemyock Youth 0-7 Blues

"Blues Rock at Hemyock"

On a beautiful autumnal day, Brixington Blues travelled to face Hemyock Youth. However, despite a spirited performance, Youth simply couldn’t match the pace and maturity of the Blues passing play. Within minutes, following a raking corner from Sebastian Jones, Peter Wright volleyed home in front of goal for the Blues first of the day. Exploiting their dominance of possession, more goals followed in quick succession. Anticipating the rebound from an Aarron Denny shot, Wright capitalized on the opportunity to seize his second. From the restart time then seemed to stop as Harry Douglas took the ball to within striking distance before superbly drilling the ball home inside the post, beyond the despairing reach of the beleagured Hemyock keeper. Staying alert at the other end, a previously untroubled Connor Gilby then made the all important save as Hemyock finally broke through the otherwise rock solid defensive pairing of Thomas Evans and Jordan Bennington. Having safely gathered in, Gilby wasted no time in releasing the ball to Denny, who promptly powered back up through centre midfield to curl a shot just over the Hemyock keeper, under the crossbar and into the net.

After the break, making good ground on the right wing, George Locke cleverly switched play, picking out Jack Gilhooly on the left, who in turn threaded the ball through to Jones in the centre, who adroitly turned his marker to fire home for goal number five. Youth fought back with passion, but were always penned back as Tim Dunn and Tyler Dobinson tackled back with real determination, continually turning the game and driving the play ever forward. Liam Dickinson went close, but on another surging run it was Dobinson, twisting and turning to commit a defender, who finally struck an unstoppable shot that arrowed home. Jacob Tinsley, showing natural flair then captured a pinpoint cross from Dobinson, setting himself with one touch before thumping home the Blues seventh.

In the last analysis, the passion of Youth had proved no match for the maturity of the Blues.

Blues 5-1 United

“Brixington Derby settled with Blues win”

Two early goals from George Locke and Peter Wright sparked the weekend fireworks early in this local derby that was played in an excellent competitive spirit. The recently formed United team put up stiff resistance against the more experienced Blues, who continually threatened due to the strong midfield combination of Aarron Denny, Tyler Dobinson and Tim Dunn, supported ably by Harry Douglas and Jordan Bennington in defence. An enterprising Alex Yolland was kept busy in the United goal, despite sterling defence from Alex Manning, George Jarmin, Reece Crozier and Kieron Saxton. Undaunted, United fought with real determination, James Roberts slipping the ball through to Jack Howarth who claimed a well-struck goal for United on the break, giving Connor Gilby no chance to make a save. On top of their game and with confidence boosted from their goal, for a while the United midfield of Charlie Cotton, Brad Lippett, Dan Yolland and Luke Lamy briefly nullified the Blues as an attacking force. But having wavered, the Blues finally recovered their composure, rediscovering their early match performance. Playing possession football with the relentless precision of a well-oiled machine, the inexorable pressure from the Blues forced an own goal from United, quelling any possibility of a draw. Liam Dickinson then went close, denied at the last by a saving tackle from Connor Gosling in the United defence. The match was then put beyond doubt when Thomas Evans slipped the ball through to Jack Gilhooly, who in turn released Tinsley to strike from distance. His shot was skilfully intercepted and hooked on the volley by Peter Wright, wrong footing the diving Alex Yolland for the Blues fourth. Just before the close of play, midfield dynamo Sebastian Jones struck the Blues’ fifth, the ball thundering home from distance. After a spirited performance, United had been beaten by the Blues in this, the first local derby match for the two Brixington teams.

Blues 5-1 Exeter Central Scorpions

“Blues Take the Sting out of Scorpions”

It is a joy to watch two well matched teams playing determined, skilful football and the Blues and Scorpions certainly didn’t disappoint, delivering a superbly entertaining game. The Scorpions’ keeper was kept busy as shot after shot rained in from the Blues, forcing a sequence of excellent fingertip saves, the ball fended onto the bar and beyond either post. The Blues mounted attack after attack, but the embattled Scorpions’ defence stood resolute. In riposte the Scorpions surged out on the break, drawing saving tackles from Harry Douglas, Jordan Bennington and Jacob Tinsley. Nonetheless, the balance of possession lay in the Blues’ favour. After a period of sustained pressure, the illusive breakthrough finally came - Sebastian Jones powering home a shot driven through a sea of players in front of goal. Looking for an equalizer, the Scorpions then had two strikers clear and on goal. Connor Gilby came out to narrow the angle, forcing the early shot which he was able to gather in after making a fine diving save.

After the break, the game resumed with the Blues again pushing forward. Tenacious midfield play by Tyler Dobinson, Thomas Evans and Josh Wadham kept the Scorpions at bay. Liam Dickinson went close, but it was George Locke that extended the Blues’ lead amidst a goalmouth scramble. The third followed soon after, Peter Wright slipping the ball through to Tim Dunn who angled the ball home inside the far post. Within minutes Dunn had returned the favour releasing Wright for an almost identical goal. The Scorpions then pulled one back with a lofted shot just beyond the reach of Gilby, leaping at full stretch. Just before the close of play, racing through from midfield, Aarron Denny struck an unstoppable shot that arrowed in to make it five.

Blues 8-1 Exwick Youth

“Wadham brace as Blues strike Eight Against Exwick”

After scoring eight against Exeter South in their last game, the Blues continued their goal scoring marathon, striking eight more against Exwick Youth. From the outset the Blues surged forward playing breathtaking football at pace, with a form and vision that belies their youth. Up the left flank, Thomas Evans and Tim Dunn partnered well, Harry Douglas and Tyler Dobinson providing an equally strong force on the right. Continually pulled wide, Exwick had no answer to the Blues’ superior passing play, allowing Sebastian Jones, Josh Wadham and Liam Dickinson to strike goals in quick succession. The Blues’ first came as Wadham unselfishly pulled the ball back from the by-line to Jones who struck sweatly home. However within minutes Jones had returned the favour, releasing Wadham to strike his first and the Blues’ second. Aarron Denny nearly got onto the scoresheet, but his shot was touched just wide of the post.Dickinson then made it three with an almost identical goal to the first, Wadham again driving to the by-line and cutting the ball back. Exwick fought hard to gain possession, but at the end of another sweeping move, Wadham neatly sidestepped his marker in front of goal to strike low and hard past the despairing reach of the keeper. Just before half-time Peter Wright almost made it five, his glancing header touched onto the bar following a beautifully flighted cross from Tyler Dobinson. Jordan Bennington was then called upon to make an excellent saving tackle as Exwick threatened briefly after breaking out from defence.

In the second half, Exwick strove hard to get back into the game and for a while a midfield stalemate ensued. Exwick’s efforts were rewarded with a goal after an excellently struck free kick scythed through the Blues defence and into the corner, passed the diving reach of Connor Gilby. Strong running and precision crossing from Dobinson troubled the Exwick defence, Jacob Tinsley benefiting from a rebound out from goal, neatly striking home from close range for the Blues’ fifth. Jack Gilhooly went close after neat individual skill to lose his markers, but it was Tinsley that made it six, rising to another Dobinson cross, powering home a headed goal just under the crossbar. Wadham then made his hat trick (and the Blues seventh) from a low struck freekick at range. Jones then made it eight, punishing Exwick following a goal kick clearance. Just before the close Aarron Denny hit the bar after a well struck shot. Final score 8-1.

   Blues 6- 0 Crediton Youth

“Can’t Deny the Blues”

Against a committed Credit Youth team, Brixington Blues struggled to recapture the quality of football previously shown in their opening away matches of the newseason.  However, their all round strength dictated play and the Blues soon took an early lead, Jacob Tinsley seizing the opportunity to score at close range after a goalmouth scramble. The busy Crediton keeper then tipped an enterprising shot from Sebastian Jones over the bar, but Jones was not to be denied, scoring after being put through by a measured pass from Tyler Dobbins. From a corner, George Lock rose majestically above the Crediton defence to neatly head home to make it three just before the break.

In the second half the game slowed, some sticky passing disrupting the run of play. Harry Douglas and Thomas Evans in defence continued to protect a rarely troubled Connor Gilby in the Blues goal. Aarron Denny and Jacob Tinsley strove hard to motivate play in midfield, linking well with Jack Gilhooly on the left and Tim Dunn on the right. But just when it seemed the game would play out to the final whistle, Peter Wright stepped up to make it four for the Blues, his left foot strike snaking inside the far post. Liam Dickinson then went close with an equally well struck shot knocked high onto the bar and over for a corner. The Blues then began to play with more conviction, regaining a more measured and fluid style of passing play. Tinsley then made it five for the Blues with a sweet right foot strike from distance and Dickinson added a sixth just before the close. The Blues had initially struggled to convince, but they were not to be denied their home win.

Broadclyst 2-3 Blues

“Blues Win Over Broadclyst”

Brixington Blues fought hard to win their first league match of the season in the new 9-a-side format. After conceding an early goal to enterprising Broadclyst, the Blues settled into a 2:4:2 formation and played a more composed passing game. Their patient efforts were eventually rewarded when Peter Wright collected a precision cross from Tyler Dobbins to strike home the equalizer from close range. The pace and power of Dobbins and Tim Dunn on the right constantly troubled the Broadclyst defence, while the overlapping link play of Jordan Bennington and George Lock on the left proved equally as effective. The Blues committed to sustained attack in search of the lead and Sebastian Jones went close, but the Broadclyst defence stood resolute. Harry Douglas, Thomas Evans and Jacob Tinsley all made ‘last man’ tackles as the Blues were increasingly caught on the break. Picking up the ball in midfield, Jack Gilhooly masterfully held up play looking for an opening – finally releasing a long, accurate pass to Aarron Denny who had time to compose himself, turn and strike the ball home for the Blues’ second goal just before half time.

Brixington had most of the possession from the restart, but after twenty minutes of sustained pressure, Broadclyst snatched a skilful equalizer. Connor Gilby then kept the Blues in the game, making a series of excellent saves that any premiership goalkeeper would have been proud of - saving at full stretch just pushing the ball onto the far post, recovering instantly to save and hold a second shot coming back in from the rebound, this time targeted inside the near post. With more urgency the Blues then picked up the pace again and after some superb one touch passing play, a clinical finish from Aarron Denny put the match beyond doubt just before the close.
