U16s 'Bls'  REPORTS

Blues 3-1 Honiton Town

Blues started this game very well with all players fired up for the usual great battle that we have with Honiton.  The passing was slick and they created plenty of chances.  The front two of West and Green were particularly lively and the pressure put on by Blues paid off when a corner was turned in to the goal by a Honiton defender.

Blues then built on their dominance by scoring a second in some style.  Alex Humphrey battled really well to win the ball in the middle; he passed the ball out to Ben Walker on the wing whose cross was met by West who turned the ball in for his 24th goal of the season.

Just before half time some great work by Walker on the left brought Blues a  penalty as he was tripped on the edge of the box after beating a couple of players and was lining up a cross.  West fired in the subsequent spot kick to put Blues into a commanding lead.

After half time Honiton really came out fired up and it was only two minutes into the half when the scrambled the ball across the line to give them hope.  On many occasions Blues would have caved in against so much pressure, but although the football in the second half was not up to the standard of the first half, Blues hung on for the well deserved victory.

Blues have now won all games since the 11th of October and at last are looking a force in this league – long may this continue

Blues 5-2 Colyton Reds

Blues played the worse football we had seen for a long time in the first 20 minutes of this game.  Playing against a team with only ten players, they fell two behind in the first ten minutes.  The first came from a defensive blunder which left the ball being shot into an open net and the second from an audacious shot from the half way line which beat the keeper.

It was not until three minutes from half time that they started playing, a fine shot from Tom Allen was parried by the keeper and Liam West was first to the ball and gave Blues a lifeline, but it wasn’t too long before they had another, Danny Green played a fine pass through for West who again kept his nerve to fire home and bring Blues level for half time.

After a stern talking to, Blues began to play football in the second half, the ball was taken down the left wing by Ben Walker who took a shot, again the keeper parried it away and Allen was on hand to slot the ball home to give Blues the lead.  The best goal of the game came when West battled well for the ball on the right wing, his low cross was met by Green who casually “back heeled” the ball into the net to make it 4-2.  West topped off another fine display by getting his 18th goal of the season and making it 5-2.

Although this was a good win in the end, Blues showed some defensive frailties that could have lost them the game to stronger opposition and not forgetting Colyton only had 10 players!  Nevertheless this was a good confidence builder for the Devon Cup match which was to be played the day after.

Sidmouth 0-8 Blues

Brixington indeed rose to the challenge of playing better from two defeats in a row with a calm display of good football and plenty of goals.

They started off well with plenty of possession particularly down the wings and this is where the first goal came from.  Matt Sharpe picked up the ball on the half way line and threaded it through for Liam West to fire low and hard into the goal for a 1-0 lead.  Danny Green in midfield was playing some delightful football and made a great pass to set up West for his second soon after.  Another great ball came from the midfield, this time it was met by Ben Walker who shot the ball in from an incredibly tight angle just in time to beat the on-rushing defender to make it 3-0.  Sharpe got his name on the score sheet with some good work on the right and ended with a well taken finish.  West got his hat trick when he received the ball wide and took it passed the keeper and fired in from close range.

Still Blues kept on going and were rewarded with two more goals before half time.

The first came from West again who picked up the ball on the edge of the box and took it in, it looked as if the Sidmouth goal keeper had got to the ball but “Westy” didn’t give up and battled well to take from the keeper and slot it home.  The 7th goal came from a corner taken by West, there was a bit of a scramble and Alex Humphrey was the first to react and got in front of everybody to smash the ball in.  At half time Blues were 7-0 and playing with great confidence and although he didn’t get on the score sheet Billy Zberowski had a great half with lots of energy and some fantastic passes.

Blues sat back after the break and although they passed the ball around well failed to be as clinical in their finishing as they were in the first half.  Only one more goal was added and that was from some great link up play between Sharpe and West with the latter firing home for his fifth of the morning.

This was a commanding performance from Blues and with a clean sheet as well.  The performance was just what the team needed after a couple of disappointing results.  Well done lads.

Blues 0-2 Stoke Hill

This was always going to be a tough game for Blues against a Stoke Hill side that was bolstered with a good majority of the disbanded league champions from the past two seasons.

As in so many games where Blues are up against good opponents, they started playing long balls over the top which resulted in the ball ending up safely in the hands of the keeper.  If they only played the ball on the ground I am sure that the result would have been different.

However Blues played some good football and made a few opportunities for themselves, whilst the defence worked well as a unit to keep the Stoke Hill attack frustrated.  At half time the scores were level at 0-0.

Blues came out for the second half much better and passed the ball around, but the final ball was just not getting through.  Finally against the run of play Blues conceded.  A free kick was given away over by the left hand corner flag.  As on so many occasions Blues didn’t get the marking right and the ball was floated in to an unmarked player who used his height to rise above the defence and head into the goal.  The second goal unfortunately soon followed, the ball broke from midfield and the attacker calmly lobbed it over the keepers head to make it 2-0.  Blues didn’t give up and they kept battling, but just didn’t make enough opportunities in the final third of the pitch.  Stoke Hill had a player sent off in the final minutes, but it was too late to make the advantage count.

This is two losses in a row for Blues so they must rise to the challenge to make every opportunity count from now on.

Blues 11-0 Pinhoe

An absolute goal feast from Blues followed up their nervous opening game from last week.  The first goal didn’t take too long to materialise, Tom Allen picked up the ball on the edge of the box and stroked it through for Matt Sharp to calmly place it into the goal for a 1-0 lead.  Then a lovely ball by Danny Green was lifted over the defence and was controlled well by Ben Walker who volleyed it into the net to double the lead.  3-0 came when a lovely ball was threaded through to Liam West who battled well to take it passed several defenders and finally rounding the keeper.  A left wing cross from Walker set West up for his 2nd and Blues 4th goal.  Sharp also claimed his 2nd goal when he picked up a ball on the edge of the box and powered the ball into the net for 5-0.

After half time, some lovely control by Allen on the edge of the box who coolly took it around two defenders led to a terrific 6th goal for Blues.  A few disastrous minutes for Pinhoe led to two goals in a matter of minutes.  Both goals came from left wing crosses by Walker who took the ball around his man and fired into the box, the first hit the defender and went into the goal and the second one came when Walker beat his man and shot for goal, unfortunately another deflection took it passed the keeper.  The 9th goal came from a terrific save from the Pinhoe keeper that fell into the path of Green who fired the ball home for his first for the club since joining in the summer, and it didn’t take long for his next, a great corner from Tom Allen was met by Green who headed the ball in for 10-0.  Blues final goal game when a shot thundered against the keeper and bounced back into play and Green followed in for his 3rd goal of the game and the 11th for Blues.

This was a terrific display of passing and well taken goals from Blues, who now know that when they play their football on the park and listen, they can achieve honours this year.  Every player did their bit today and although the score looked very one sided, Pinhoe never gave up and battled for every ball and were just unlucky on the day, their manager should take heart from the way that his team played.  This was a real confidence boost for the tough game against Honiton Town next week, so we all hope Blues can take this form forward.

Man of the match was Ben Walker
